A 427–1 vote for transparency should be historic. Instead, Trump is preparing to twist the law into his personal shield.
The House of Representatives just did something extraordinary: it passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act by a vote of 427 to 1. In an era when lawmakers can barely agree on what day it is, that kind of unity is a thunderclap. It is a demand for sunlight on one of the darkest scandals in modern American history. The message from the House could not be clearer: the public deserves to know what the Justice Department has been hiding about Jeffrey Epstein, his enablers, and the powerful figures who orbited him.

And then, in a move that stunned even seasoned observers, the Senate followed suit almost immediately. With no objections, the bill was passed by unanimous consent. That kind of speed and unanimity is almost unheard of. It shows just how much pressure there is to finally let the public see the truth. For once, Congress spoke with one voice: the Epstein files must be released.
But while Congress has done its job, Trump has already shown how he intends to undermine it. Earlier this month, after House Democrats released a tranche of Epstein emails that mentioned him directly, Trump jumped on social media to demand a new investigation. Pam Bondi dutifully complied, assigning Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton to lead the probe. That was not about justice. That was not about accountability. That was about Trump protecting himself.
Trump is terrified of these files because they implicate him. Not just his political enemies, not just nameless financiers or celebrities, but Trump himself. He was close to Epstein. He praised him publicly. He flew on his plane. He welcomed him at Mar‑a‑Lago. The record is there, and Trump knows it. That is why he ordered Bondi to launch a partisan investigation into Democrats. It was a calculated distraction, designed to keep the spotlight off his own ties to Epstein. Trump is not protecting the truth. He is protecting himself.
The bill requires the Justice Department to release Epstein‑related records within thirty days of becoming law. But it allows withholding if disclosure would “jeopardize an ongoing investigation.” Trump knows this. By manufacturing an investigation before the bill even reaches his desk, he gives DOJ the perfect excuse to keep the most damning documents locked away. Survivors will be told to wait. Journalists will be told to wait. The public will be told to wait. And Trump will sit back, smug, knowing he has turned a transparency mandate into another smokescreen.

The cruelty of this maneuver cannot be overstated. Survivors of Epstein’s abuse have waited decades for accountability. They have endured gaslighting, intimidation, and endless delays. The Transparency Act was supposed to be their moment of vindication. Instead, Trump is dangling hope while ensuring the files remain locked away. He is playing politics with their trauma, turning their demand for justice into another pawn in his endless game of self‑preservation.
The House vote was historic. The Senate’s unanimous consent was even more striking. But the real battle begins now, as the bill heads to Trump’s desk. Will he honor the spirit of transparency, or will he sign the bill and gut it with the “ongoing investigation” exemption? If history is any guide, the answer is obvious. Trump has built his entire career on lies, obstruction, and manipulation. Transparency without accountability is just another lie, and Trump is already preparing to tell it.
Survivors deserve better. The public deserves better. And America deserves better than a president who turns sunlight into shadow.
